4 REASONS WHY WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO MNET'S KINGDOM

Feb 2, 2021

By Rae Love

Coming off the overwhelming success of its rookie group competition, “Road to Kingdom,” MNet is gearing up for the first season of “Kingdom” with much fanfare. This highly anticipated idol survival reality show follows six K-Pop groups as they compete through a series of challenges and eliminations to become King. So whether you are tuning in to hear rearranged versions of your favorite group's hit songs, cover song performances, or new songs produced just for the show, the competition is going to be fierce, to say the least.

While "Kingdom" doesn't officially air until April, here are four reasons to look forward to it.

1. THE LINE-UP

BTOB

This award-winning K-Pop group debuted in 2012 and is considered a strong contender for the title. Consisting of six members, including Seo Eun-kwang, Lee Min-hyuk, Lee Chang-sub, Im Hyun-sik, Peniel Shin and Yook Sung-jae, BTOB will be competing through their four-member subunit, BTOB 4U, because Yook Sung-jae and Im Hyun-sik are currently serving in the military.

IKON

iKON is a Hip-hop/K-Pop group that has been making a legacy of its own through its unique discography since 2015. Currently, consisting of six members including Jinhwan, Yunhyeong, Bobby, Donghyuk, Ju-ne and Chanwoo, iKON’s distinctive sound and lyrics are sure to be a highlight of the competition.

SF9

Debuting in 2016, this final third generation group in the competition. Considered the first dance-boy group of its kind, SF9’s dance skills are going to be something to contend with on the show. The nine-member group includes Youngbin, Inseong, Jaeyoon, Dawon, Rowoon, Zuho, Taeyang, Hwiyoung, and Chani.

ATEEZ

This fourth-generation supergroup has been highly recognized by their peers and the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for their contributions in music, philanthropy, and more since their 2018 debut. Currently consisting of seven-members, including Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Wooyoung, and Jongho, ATEEZ’s effortless synchronization and dance skills are ready for the big stage.

We hope to see ATEEZ’s Mingi back out on stage soon, even if it’s not on “Kingdom.” He’s been on hiatus since November 2020 due to health reasons.

STRAY KIDS

Following their highly successful first full-length album, IN, that dropped in August 2020, Stray Kids, known as the most formidable fourth-generation K-pop, is ready for the challenge. Debuting in 2018, Stray Kids is a fan-favorite to take the title of King. Currently consisting of eight members including, Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N.

The Boyz

It’s no surprise this Gaon Music chart-topping, multiple award-winning group won “Road to Kingdom,” in July 2020. Consisting of eleven-members including Sangyeon, Jacob, Younghoon, Hyunjae, Juyeon, Kevin, New, Q, Ju Haknyeon, Sunwoo, and Eric won, the Boyz are not only ready for the challenge of “Kingdom,” but also the stiff competition offered by the other groups.

2. The Hosts

Expectations are high as the two charming members of TVXQ – U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin are set to host!

3. The Friendships

Many of the idols on “Kingdom” already know each other from previous variety programs, K-Dramas, meetings, and more. We hope to see new and existing friendships on display throughout the show.

4. The performances

If the teaser performance at MAMA 2020 is any indicator of what we can expect from the first season of “Kingdom,” we are in one heck of a show.

Which group are you looking forward to most?
